Hay tres familias en este orden: Elefantes africanos, Elefantes asi\u00e1ticos y Mamuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S\u00f3lo la familia de los elefantes sigue existiendo en la actualidad. Entonces, \u00bfqu\u00e9 tama\u00f1o ten\u00edan los mamuts en comparaci\u00f3n con los elefantes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El mamut lanudo no era tan grande como se pensaba en un principio. De hecho, <strong>s\u00f3lo ten\u00edan el tama\u00f1o de los elefantes africanos modernos<\/strong>. La altura de los hombros de un var\u00f3n oscilar\u00eda entre los 9 y los 11 pies, con un peso aproximado de 6 toneladas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque mucha gente crea err\u00f3neamente lo contrario, los elefantes y los mamuts no est\u00e1n estrechamente emparentados: son primos lejanos. Empecemos hablando de la <a href=\"https:\/\/elephantguide.com\/es-mx\/las-tres-especies-de-elefante\/\">especies de elefantes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elefante africano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Los elefantes africanos (ya sean de la sabana o de la selva africana) tienen cuellos que se hunden hacia abajo, dos extremidades extendidas en la trompa para agarrarse y <a href=\"https:\/\/elephantguide.com\/es-mx\/por-que-los-elefantes-tienen-orejas-grandes\/\">orejas muy grandes para ayudarles a mantenerse frescos<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El elefante africano de los matorrales es la especie m\u00e1s grande de las dos y vive en zonas abiertas cubiertas de hierba. En cambio, el elefante africano de bosque prefiere vivir en bosques arbolados donde hay m\u00e1s cobertura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elefante asi\u00e1tico<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>El elefante asi\u00e1tico puede ser el pariente vivo del mamut, aunque esto a\u00fan no est\u00e1 confirmado. De peque\u00f1o tama\u00f1o, con hombros redondeados y una sola <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/what-an-elephants-brain-reveals-about-its-trunk-180981037\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">l\u00f3bulo del tronco<\/a>...estos elefantes parecen diferentes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las hembras de elefante asi\u00e1tico no tienen colmillos y <a href=\"https:\/\/elephantguide.com\/es-mx\/como-quedan-elefantes-en-el-mundo\/\">la poblaci\u00f3n de elefantes asi\u00e1ticos<\/a> est\u00e1 en peligro cr\u00edtico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antiguamente exist\u00edan muchas especies de mamuts, como el mamut lanudo macho, el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/chis\/learn\/historyculture\/pygmymammoth.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mamut pigmeo<\/a>el mamut colombino y el mamut estepario. Los mamuts se extinguieron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Una diferencia clave entre los mamuts y otras especies es que s\u00f3lo queda uno vivo. Muchos factores provocaron la extinci\u00f3n de los mamuts hace unos 4.000 a\u00f1os, entre ellos los cambios medioambientales y la caza humana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Una vez finalizada la era glacial, su falta de capacidad para adaptarse a un clima m\u00e1s c\u00e1lido hizo que se extinguieran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La p\u00e9rdida de h\u00e1bitats propicios para los elefantes y la caza furtiva contribuyen al estr\u00e9s que hoy pone a los elefantes y a muchas otras especies en peligro de extinci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Los colmillos de los mamuts eran m\u00e1s grandes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Una caracter\u00edstica clave que diferencia a los elefantes de los mamuts es que estos \u00faltimos eran m\u00e1s grandes y ten\u00edan colmillos m\u00e1s largos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adem\u00e1s de poder alcanzar longitudes de hasta 16 pies, los colmillos de los mamuts eran tambi\u00e9n m\u00e1s retorcidos y curvados que los de los verdaderos elefantes. Los colmillos de elefante m\u00e1s largos registrados s\u00f3lo miden 11 pies y 7 pulgadas de largo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las hembras de elefante asi\u00e1tico se distinguen de las dem\u00e1s porque no tienen colmillos. Del mismo modo, los elefantes africanos machos y hembras <a href=\"https:\/\/elephantguide.com\/es-mx\/los-elefantes-tienen-cabeza-todo-lo-que-necesitas-saber\/\">colmillos de elefante<\/a> se utilizan para la autodefensa y para afirmar la dominaci\u00f3n sobre otros machos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los elefantes africanos y asi\u00e1ticos tienen unos largos ap\u00e9ndices llamados colmillos que salen del extremo de la trompa. Estos grandes colmillos son similares a nuestros dedos, ya que son sensibles y diestros. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00ed que, al igual que nosotros utilizamos las manos para agarrar y coger cosas, los elefantes tambi\u00e9n usan sus colmillos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Los mamuts pose\u00edan gruesos abrigos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Como puede atestiguar cualquiera que haya visto uno en persona, los elefantes tienen una cubierta extremadamente escasa de pelo corto y \u00e1spero. Da la impresi\u00f3n de que carecen totalmente de pelo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Las especies de mamuts no ten\u00edan este problema: su grueso pelaje les permit\u00eda sobrevivir en climas g\u00e9lidos y helados.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Algunos incluso ten\u00edan dos capas de pelaje para mantenerse calientes en el fr\u00edo m\u00e1s intenso. Los mamuts lanudos machos pod\u00edan sobrevivir e incluso prosperar en climas extremadamente fr\u00edos gracias a su grueso y fuerte pelaje. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sin embargo, cuando su clima empez\u00f3 a calentarse, su voluminoso cabello les perjudic\u00f3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. En cambio, la frente de un elefante africano t\u00edpico desciende directamente hacia la trompa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La cabeza y la trompa del elefante africano est\u00e1n unidas por un menor <a href=\"https:\/\/elephantguide.com\/es-mx\/anatomia-del-elefante\/\">caracter\u00edstica anat\u00f3mica prominente<\/a> que el mamut.
